About
Conversations Across the Field of Dance Studies is an annual publication of Dance Studies Association dedicated to current themes and debates in the field of dance studies. Each issue is edited by (a) different guest editor(s) and is published online in an open access format. As such, Conversations is a venue in which scholars, artists, and educators of dance and related disciplines can respond quickly and publicly to current events and pressing issues as identified by members of an international dance studies community. Conversations publishes a range of formats, such as think pieces, scholarly dialogues, practitioner critical reflections, photo and video essays, poetic reveries, reports from the field, ethnographic considerations, introductions to archival repositories, theoretical provocations, interviews, proceedings from important recent roundtables, and more.
The articles published in this journal undergo a rigorous editorial review process led by guest editors and supported by the Editorial Board for each volume. Submissions are carefully evaluated for quality, relevance, and alignment with the journal’s thematic focus. While Conversations does not follow a conventional double-blind peer review, it employs a thorough peer-informed process. Guest editors—experts in the relevant fields—review submissions, provide detailed feedback, and may recommend revisions or rejection. Additionally, members of the Conversations Editorial Board, as peers in the broader field of dance studies and research, ensure that all contributions meet the journal’s scholarly and editorial standards. This collaborative review process fosters the inclusion of diverse perspectives and supports innovative research that aligns with the objectives of each volume. Typically, we publish an average of 15 contributions per volume. All submissions undergo evaluation by the two Guest Editors, as well as the Editor of Conversations. Additionally, our five Editorial Board members each review three submissions, providing detailed input throughout the submission-to-publication process.
Conversations has published annual issues from 2007-present. Prior to 2007, the Society for Dance History Scholars (SDHS) newsletter served as a similar platform for publication.
Proposals to guest edit annual issues should be directed to the Editor at Conversations-editorial@dancestudiesassociation.org.
The 2021 issue and move to Michigan Publishing Services e-platform were supported by a grant from Critical Minded, an Allied Media Project.
