The Journal of Practical Ethics is an open access journal in moral and political philosophy (and related areas) from the Uehiro Oxford Institute, located at the University of Oxford.

The Journal of Practical Ethics is an invitation only journal. Papers are anonymously appraised prior to publication by expert reviewers who are not part of the editorial staff. It is entirely open access online, and print copies may be ordered at cost price via a print-on-demand service. Authors and reviewers are offered an honorarium for accepted articles. The journal aims to bring the best in academic moral and political philosophy, applied to practical matters, to a broader student or interested public audience. It seeks to promote informed, rational debate, and is not tied to any one particular viewpoint. The journal will present a range of views and conclusions within the analytic philosophy tradition. It is funded through the generous support of the Uehiro Foundation in Ethics and Education.

If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author grants JPE and Michigan Publishing a non-exclusive, perpetual license to publish and distribute the work under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 license. Peer Review

This journal follows a double blind peer review procedure for Articles and Commentaries:

  1. The Editor-in-Chief (EiC) identifies potential authors, requesting a blinded paper.
  2. Once received by the JPE, the papers initially go to the EiC for review. The EiC  decides (in some cases in consultation with Senior Journal advisors) to either (i) send the paper as is for review via an Associate Editor (AE), (ii) request immediate revisions (e.g. for accessibility if it's unsuitable for the JPE’s generalist audience), or (iii) reject the paper.
  3. Once approved, the Managing Editor (ME) will anonymise the properties of the docs for blind review, and check the doc itself to ensure that it is indeed blind.
  4. Approved papers are sent blinded to an AE (selected on the basis of their subject expertise), who will arrange 2 reviewers.
  5. After reviews are received, the handling AE will make a recommendation (reject / request revisions / accept as is) and sends this to the EiC for approval.
