Media Industries is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that supports critical studies of media industries, institutions, and policies worldwide.

Focus and Scope

Media Industries accepts submissions on a rolling basis.

Submissions can address the full spectrum of media industries, including film, television, internet, radio, music, publishing, gaming, advertising, and mobile communications, and query a range of industry-related concerns and processes, such as production, distribution, infrastructure, policy, exhibition, and retailing. Contemporary or historical studies may explore industries individually or examine relations between industrial sectors, employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methodologies.

We expect contributions to adopt a critical, rather than instrumental, perspective and engage with relevant media industries literature. We are especially interested in contributions that draw attention to global and international perspectives, and use innovative methodologies, imaginative theoretical approaches, and new research directions. We encourage authors to employ the online format creatively by incorporating audiovisual materials and hyperlinks within their articles.

We currently do not accept English translations of research previously published in a different language.

Peer Review

All manuscripts published in Media Industries have undergone an external, double-blind peer review by at least two members of our editorial board and/or recognized experts within the field.

Open call submissions are first reviewed by the editor to ensure they (a) abide by the author guidelines; (b) address subject matter and perspectives appropriate for the journal; and (c) demonstrate in its arguments sophisticated reasoning, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies. If the editor considers the submission meets the criteria for peer review, they send an anonymous version to reviewers with relevant expertise to provide a more in-depth evaluation of the submission’s merits. Only the managing editor knows the identities of the author(s) and reviewers.

We make every attempt to return initial publication decisions with feedback to authors within 90 days.
