Cynthia Cravens is the director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as well as an Associate Professor of English. In her role as director, she supports faculty, academic staff, and graduate teaching assistants in creating rich, collaborative learning environments using pedagogical and disciplinary methods. Her area of specialization is broad and focuses on pedagogies of social justice, community engagement, humanities-based teaching and learning, and public writing. As Associate Editor of To Improve the Academy, she hopes to both broaden her experience with educational development as well as share her perspective as a faculty member of an HBCU.
