Submissions

The Journal of Electronic Publishing welcomes articles from scholars and practitioners in digital and contemporary publishing on topics including, but not limited to, trade publishing, scholarly communications, ebooks, audiobooks, electronic literature, and digital production workflows.

Scholarly articles will be subject to double blind peer review (where neither the author nor the reviewer know each other’s identity); other articles are typically invited, although authors are welcome to suggest topics. Good ideas are always appreciated.

JEP is also interested in creating an archive of articles that cover electronic publishing. We will happily consider articles or conference papers that may have appeared elsewhere. Of course, authors must hold the copyright or get permission from the copyright holder to allow publication in JEP.

The Journal of Electronic Publishing accepts three main submission types:

  • Scholarly articles presenting research about digital or contemporary publishing
  • Experiments that explore issues in publishing studies through innovative forms, e.g. video recordings of conference proceedings, a podcast, or fictional/biographical narratives.
  • Reviews of books, websites, digital projects, and other web resources.

About

The Journal of Electronic Publishing (JEP) is an open access journal that publishes research about contemporary scholarly publishing issues and practices. Our contributors and readers are publishers, scholars, librarians, journalists, students, technologists, attorneys, and others with an interest in the methods and means of contemporary publishing.

Focus and Scope

The Journal of Electronic Publishing (JEP) is an open access journal that publishes research and discussion about contemporary publishing practices, and the impact of those practices upon users. Our contributors and readers are publishers, scholars, librarians, journalists, students, technologists, attorneys, and others with an interest in the methods and means of contemporary publishing. At its inception in January 1995, JEP carved out an important niche by recognizing that print communication was in the throes of significant change, and that digital communication would become an important—and in some cases predominant—means for transmitting published information.

JEP aspires to document changes in publishing, and in some cases to stimulate and shape the direction of those changes. The articles present innovative ideas, best practices, and leading-edge thinking about all aspects of publishing, authorship, and readership. The editor and publisher are committed to presenting wide-ranging and diverse viewpoints on contemporary publishing practices, and to encouraging dialogue and understanding between key decision-makers in publishing and those who are affected by the decisions being made.

Editorial direction of JEP is the responsibility of the editor Simon Rowberry, Lecturer in Communications, Media and Culture at the University of Stirling. See our editors page for more information about the editorial and production staff involved with JEP.

Submission Checklist

Each submission should include:

  • The e-mail address of the author to which readers can write if different from the e-mail address to be used by JEP's editors.
  • A narrative biography of each author, of no more than 125 words.
  • A short abstract of your article of no more than 300 words.
  • The URL of the author's personal home page, project or university department.

In addition, all links to reference sources, examples, etc., should be checked twice.

As of 2019, JEP requires that all published articles meet the basic digital accessibility standards for visual resources. Papers accepted for publication in JEP that publish visual assets (e.g. images) must include alt-text (or long descriptions) for each visual asset, as well as appropriate captions. For more information on the basic principles of describing visual resource for accessibility in arts and humanities publications, please visit Describing Visual Resources.org.
