To celebrate 30 years of the Michigan Journal for Community Service Learning being a key voice in the field, we invite “Editorial Reflections” on past publications of the journal. These retrospective reflections will appear alongside this year’s second issue (31.2) and will be featured on our blog.
The editorial note should run for no more than 2-3 pages and offer insights including the following:
- What resonated originally?
- Are we still talking about things in the same way?
- What recent or current articles seem to be in conversation with this article?
Consider reflecting on one of our most cited articles, or others you have found impactful to you and the field over the last 30 years:
- Forms and Dimensions of Civic Involvement by Yan Wang and Golden Jackson
- Service-Learning in Two Keys: Paulo Freire’s Critical Pedagogy in Relation to John Dewey’s Pragmatism by Thomas Deans
- The Irony of Service: Charity, Project and Social Change in Service-Learning by Keith Morton
- The Impact of Service-Learning on College Students by Janet Eyler, Dwight Giles Jr., and John Braxton
- Traditional vs. Critical Service-Learning: Engaging the Literature to Differentiate Two Models by Tania Mitchell
- Comparing the Effects of Community Service and Service-Learning by Vogelgesang, Lori J.; Astin, Alexander W.
Please submit your editorial reflection to mjcsl@umich.edu for review by the Editorial Board by Friday, June 27, 2025.
