About Global Storytelling: Journal of Digital and Moving Images is a new journal founded by Editor-in-Chief Ying Zhu, hosted at Hong Kong Baptist University, and published by Michigan Publishing. Please review the journal mission and editorial board.
Focus and Scope Global Storytelling invites written submissions that engage with the affect (emotional engagement) and effect (social impact) of audiovisual storytelling. We cover a range of storytelling modes, genres, platforms, and industries with the aim of bridging the gap between academia and the wider world and deepening our understanding of how storytelling shapes our identities and perceptions. The journal is methodologically broad and welcomes submissions from traditional scholars (including disciplines such as film and media studies, cultural studies, gender studies, communication, history, political science, sociology, philosophy, and psychology) as well as from critics, curators, policymakers, and public intellectuals.
Submission Checklist
  1. Global Storytelling typically publishes four types of pieces: research articles, short essays, individual reviews, and review essays. Research articles should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words long, including notes and captions. Please contact gstjournal@hkbu.edu.hk in advance to propose short essays or reviews.
  2. Research articles must include an abstract of 150 to 250 words and up to six keywords or phrases to help us find appropriate peer reviewers.
  3. Submissions should follow Chicago Manual of Style guidelines. All bibliographic information should be in endnotes, with full citation information for each source given in the first note mentioning that source (see Sample Citations). Submissions should not contain bibliographies or reference lists.
  4. Authors are encouraged to provide up to six figures or images per submission and are responsible for obtaining permission to publish materials that do not fall under Fair Use. For resources on Fair Use, please consult the Fair Use Research Guide (University of Michigan Library) as well as the Fair Use Policies of the SCMS. Please embed only low-resolution images into your submission for peer-review. If your article is accepted, you must provide high resolution versions of your images that will be suitable for printing. Please provide the highest-resolution version of the image you can, and understand that if it is not at least 3-4 inches wide or tall when saved at 300 DPI, then it will be sized down for print.
  5. Research articles are reviewed in a double-blind process, so submissions must be fully anonymized. If the manuscript references a submitting author's published work, please use uppercase placeholders such as AUTHOR and DATE in the submission where needed (e.g. “In DATE, AUTHOR argued that…”).
  6. For additional information about submissions, please consult our style guide.
  7. For any submissions questions involving the journal's online Janeway portal, please see the Janeway author guide.
