About the International Consortium for Social Development

The International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) is an organization of scholars, practitioners, and students working in social development arenas around the world. The Consortium was created in the 1970s by a group of social work educators to respond to pressing human concerns from an international, interdisciplinary perspective. Today, the ICSD is a well-established and widely recognized international catalyst for sharing ideas among many nations and across many cultures.

Among its numerous functions, the ICSD serves as a clearinghouse for information on international social development. The Consortium fosters collaboration among personnel of organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, UNESCO, and UNICEF as well as among professional associations in the human services and institutions of higher learning. The Consortium organizes an international conference in July of odd-numbered years, with the most recent conference held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in July 2019.

More information about the ICSD can be found here: http://socialdevelopment.net/index.htm

About social development

Social development processes aim to bring about economic and social improvement in the lives of people through capacity building. Often this involves institution-building and social change.

Social development approaches seek to develop conceptual frameworks and effective intervention strategies to create peaceful and equitable solutions to the problems of survival at the local, national and global levels. Social development scholars and practitioners seek to:

• Develop capacity of individuals and communities
• Promote world peace and social justice
• Improve access to adequate health care and education
• Overcome discrimination against the most vulnerable populations
• Create sustainable income and economic structures for all
• Promote and achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals
